Fire and Rescue Placitas Volunteer Fire Birgade

AUGUST - 2008
Station Notes & News

By Chief Bud Brinkerhoff

A Business Meeting was held on July 1st. the minutes of which are attached.  I encourage you to read these minutes as they will keep you updated on what is going on in the department as well as provide relevant feedback from the Sandoval County Chiefs Association meeting.

Our State Fire Funds have been received.  Last year we had a budget of $162,829.  This year we received $168,990, with a carryover of unused funds (primarily on our Station 42 remodeling project) bringing our actual expense budget to close to $224,000.  We’ve also received our EMS State Funds for this next fiscal year in the amount of $6,343 (very close to what we received last year).  Therefore we are positioned to aggressively purchase those items that will keep us the top responding District in SandovalCounty.

A couple of other monetary items are in the wings.  Fred Rossbach has been successful in securing for PVFB a wildland grant in excess of $12,000.  He will be facilitating the department expenditures and reimbursement for this grant.  Thank you, Fred, for getting this grant for us and helping us maximize our wildland firefighting capability.

I am also in the process of putting in a grant for an additional thermal imaging camera for PVFB.  I will keep you posted on our success with this grant.

In other activities…

  • We had a successful parade and July 4th activities with no reported fires or injuries associated with fireworks.  (Sal Gullo wrote a wonderful article for the Signpost, which I hope you read and express appreciation to Sal for taking the time to write and send in.)

  • We’ve replaced the roofing on Station 42 and finished up the plumbing/heating and electrical modifications.  Sandy has done a great job of coordinating this remodeling and is striving to complete the total remodeling in time for a fall station dedication ceremony.

  • Alejandro Gurule is taking on the project of procuring emergency lights for the new Service 41 vehicle.  We will also be ordering the necessary ladders and equipment necessary to make that unit an ISO qualifying “service” vehicle.  We will also be purchasing the necessary air transfer equipment to convert that unit to our air supply, taking on the function previously performed by the air trailer.

  • Sal and Sandy are spearheading a committee working towards the full functionality of the new Rescue 41, meeting the manufacturer’s specifications as well as enhancing its usefulness to PVFB.

  • Sal and I met with the architect recently and provided some fine tuning of his proposed drawings for the two-bay addition to Station 41.  We proposed deeper bays to help with parking our longer apparatus, without blocking easy access around it; and proposed repositioning the planned structure addition to prevent encroachment on our property line on the southwest.

  • We have moved forward with the purchase of a Honda CRV 4WD as a replacement vehicle for the Chief 4 Explorer.  We have taken possession of the vehicle, but are awaiting the order and installation of lights, radio and emergency equipment to make it fully functional.  I advocate that the old Chief 4 vehicle be utilized by the Asst. Chiefs, in an alternating fashion, to facilitate their attendance to meetings, trainings and responses.

  • We are on the brink of the processing of EMS reports electronically.  There will be a decision made at the next Business Meeting on the exact day of implementation of this process.
